Brian followed up on a request for information generated from Isotec’s direct marketing program. Isotec’s “Shootem Up” Reveals the Dangers of Low Spall Glass

We learned and witnessed number of things during our 8th annual “Shootem Up”. With all that what we learned, the unanimous take away was not to consider “low spall”  types of glass  as a substitute for UL® listed glass when ballistic protection is required. Think in terms of razor sharp shards of glass cutting into your employees or patrons, as was the case with our “witness” mannequin Polly Purebread.

“Low spall glass” is a clever marketing term, somewhat like the terms “acceptable toxicity levels”, or “may have negative side effects”.   Low spall glass is an adequate blunt force attack resistant glass (think hammer), not a ballistic glass. Low spall glass does have ballistic resistant properties. Those properties include shards of glass that could result in blindness. Take look at Polly. Low spall glass shatters by the impact of a bullet. Polly’s facial and head wounds show that glass shards from low spall glass can cause facial, head and neck wounds to the very people you’re trying to protect. That’s not protection, that’s  a role of the dice with fingers crossed.

We are where we are by choice. Before considering low spall glass for ballistic protection ask yourself; how many shards of glass does it take to blind a person? Put another way, would you stand behind low spall glass being fired on? Exactly.

We’re not sure how low spall glass became an acceptable substitute for UL Listed glass. Was it costs? That seems a dear price to pay if you ask us. Not on your watch, and hopefully not on yours.

ISIL Claims Responsibility For Attack On Belgian Police Officers

ISIL has claimed responsibility for Saturday’s machete attack during which two police officers were severely wounded at a security checkpoint in Charleroi, Belgium, the New York Times  (8/7, Breeden) reports. According to a statement issued Sunday by ISIL’s Amaq News Agency, a “soldier of the Islamic State” carried out the attack “in response to calls to target citizens of countries belonging to the crusader coalition.” The Wall Street Journal  (8/7, A1, Norman) reports that Belgian authorities, who have opened a terrorism investigation into the assault, said the attacker, who was shot by police and later died, has been identified as a 33-year-old Algerian who had been living in the country since 2012.

Do you consider doors that do what you want, when you want, to be smart? How about a door system that reacts before you do? Imagine doors that are disciplined enough to protect you from harm or respond to your request in an emergency. How does this magic happen?

Smart doors are the result of aligning a series of arrayed sensors and components in constant communication with a computer know as a Programmable Logic Controller or PLC. PLCs play significant roles in our daily lives. They control stop lights, air conditioning (AKA HVAC), nuclear reactors, complex automated factories, and yes, for decades, our interlocking door systems.

PLCs don’t give operating instructions randomly. They are hard wired and pre-programmed with your operating instructions. They’ll transmit your instructions when you want and where, 24/7, every day. BTW, though done serially all this happens in the bat of an eye. We call this the “scenario of operation”.

A simple scenario of operation is “lock door A if door B is unlocked and remains unlocked”. That is a simple but fundamental act for an interlocking door system. Without that logic programmed in, both doors would be open and effectually lose “interlock’ functionality.

Doors can be programmed to work differently based on a multitude of requirements to accommodate a client’s need, and local codes. With the appropriate technologies in place, any operational requirement imaginable can be programmed into a PLC that will make the doors do what you want they and when.

Smart doors can now be controlled. Smart doors can be controlled and monitored from pretty much anywhere via web or cellular connectivity with smart phones, tablets, or dedicated wireless remotes.
